What is Medicare?
The federal health insurance program for:
- People who are 65 or older
- Certain younger people with disabilities
- People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD)
What are the parts of Medicare?
The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:
- Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. - Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Part B covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. - Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines).
How does Medicare work?
With Medicare, you have options in how you get your coverage. Once you enroll, you’ll need to decide how you’ll get your Medicare coverage.
Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A
Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). You pay for services as you get them. When you get services, you’ll pay a
deductible at the start of each year, and you usually pay 20% of the cost of the Medicare-approved service, called coinsurance. If you want drug coverage, you can add a separate drug plan (Part D).Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some Medigap policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like emergency medical care when you travel outside the U.S.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage is Medicare-approved plan from a private company that offers an alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug coverage. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. Plans may offer some extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover — like vision, hearing, and dental services. Medicare Advantage Plans have yearly contracts with Medicare and must follow Medicare’s coverage rules. The plan must notify you about any changes before the start of the next enrollment year.
Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D)
Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription drugs you need. To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a Medicare-approved plan that offers drug coverage (this includes Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage Plans with drug coverage).

Medico in South Carolina is one perfect example. Very competitive rates today with small increases expected in the future. Remember, Medicare part N must be the same exact program no matter which insurance company is doing the underwriting - the US government sets the definitive rules that all insurance carriers must adhere to. My husband and I have been with Chris @ Mayriver Medicare over 5 years now! The reason why we have stayed with Chris is because he chose the correct Medicare Supplement for both of us based on our income and the amount we could allow in having the Medicare Supplement and a stand alone Prescription plan....in addition to the Life Insurance plans he can write also! Everything he does, he does with the customer in mind and their needs first and foremost! May River Medicare is CUSTOMER FIRST based! Our Medicare Supplement plan premium is still at a great rate. It is so simple---all you do is meet the Deductible (which as we all know will change a little every year) and after that you do not have to worry about receiving a BIG 20% Bill from the providers! We already know what our bill will be after we meet the deductible---for PLAN N! I have learned what a difference the choice between Plan G and Plan N can be...$$$ wise! And the BILL I am talking about is the excess charge the DR can charge, which runs anywhere from $0.00 up to $20!!! It never goes above that amount! That's how I know what our bills will be IF the DR charges the excess charge! It feels great knowing you already know what the amount of your bill will be without even opening the envelope!! Here is our personal experience example: one year ago this past March, my husband had Ankle surgery---well, in March 2022 he lacked just a small amount meeting his Medical deductible---of course for surgery clearance he had to go through having his heart, lungs ( oxygen output), because he is a smoker, etc...he met is deductible with the heart Dr! When we receive the EOB and I saw the DRs charges and the hospital charges (for using the operating room), as an outpatient (charge was $37,000 plus!) and that was for the hospital alone! I went to my husband and said look! This is why we have a Medicare Supplement Plan N!If it were not for us having the ability to be on a Supplement plan, we would be paying 20% charges to every provider we see! That is the difference between Medicare Supplements (Medi Gap) plans and Medicare Advantage plans----the Out of Pocket Costs! Now who can predict what their bill will be after this kind of surgery??? And Providers costs are not going to get lower either!! Bottom line, if you need a good medical plan and can make room in your budget to pay for the Medicare Supplement plan and a great prescription plan to fill the gap for your medications---call Chris Dewey @ May River Medicare in Bluffton, SC!! or go online and Request a quote!!!
